Deene
Laina is a Brighton-based illustrator with a passion for hand drawn illustration, making use of watercolours, pastels, pencils and more to explore colour and texture. Laina’s illustrations are often observational, taking inspiration from nature, literature and film. The everyday scenes she creates are transformed with exuberance and feeling, lending themselves to a host of different purposes, from editorial and publishing to packaging and branding. Clients include Wieden + Kennedy x It’s Nice That, Penguin Random House, Contra Mag and more.

"
When drawing people, I want to capture the nature of the person but also play around with the style of the drawing.
"
I love capturing my surroundings and trying to channel the atmosphere of a place as much as possible using colours, perspective and lighting.
"
My sketchbook helps me figure out compositions, colours and processes. I love capturing ideas down quickly and unexpectedly finding new things that work.
"
When I create pieces through printmaking, I’m able to focus more on the process rather than the final product. This takes away a lot of the pressure and means that there is more room for unpredictability.
